Kathy Burkholder: Kathy Burkholder is a former "Zookeeper" at the Insect Zoo, Los Angeles County Natural History Museum and was the Nature and Science Instructor for the City of Manhattan Beach, California.You may have seen or heard her on many local and national television and radio shows, or read about her in newspaper articles as a specialist in insects, butterfly gardens, and birthday parties.

She has also performed at numerous shopping malls, grand openings, fairs, special events, charity functions, schools and birthday parties.

Kathy was also a volunteer at the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur and has extensive animal (and children) handling experience.

Description of program: Kathy's Critters specializes in reptiles, amphibians, arthropods and other misunderstood but friendly critters. Our critters include snakes, lizards, salamanders, newts, frogs, toads, Madagascar hissing cockroaches, scorpions and tarantulas.

Kathy, or one of her assistants, introduces each of the animals in a gentle and nurturing educational program. Edu-taining (educating and entertaining) the audience with wonderful bits of information on each animal, the presenter dispels myths about these animals, and shows the children how to respect and appreciate our "misunderstood" friends.

Students will learn:
    * Classification and characteristics
    * Predator/Prey relationships
    * The differences between omnivores, herbivores and carnivores
    * The roles animals play in the environment
    * Appreciation of all living creatures and more

Petting Zoo programs are perfect for Special Events!
For hands-on educational fun, we can set up a “petting area” for an up close experience at your special event. Perfect for school carnivals, Halloween parties, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, large parties, corporate functions and much more.

We are proud to have on our staff, Marguerite Kusuhara. She has a Master’s Degree in Asian Psychological/visual Anthropology and is a professional Middle Eastern musician, singer and dancer and a Magic Castle magician.

• The “Fortune Telling Snake”
• Gypsy dress-up and Middle Eastern dance classes

Teacher’s Workshops:
• Starting an insect collection: Learn how to catch, identify, pin, spread and label insects correctly.
• Growing a Butterfly and Wildlife Garden. Learn how to create an organic vegetable or butterfly and wildlife garden for your school or classroom. Learn about our beneficial insects for safe pest control.
