"This assembly was, by far, one of the finest assemblies I have seen. The assembly provided students with an understanding of the contributions of Native Americans as a whole and the Juaneño tribe of Orange County specifically. The presentation was academically sound, content rich, and culturally sensitive."
Meg Desmarais, Fourth Grade TeacherSan Juan School (currently principal at Kinoshita Elementary)
Jacque Nunez: A descendant of Leather Jacket soldier, Felicious Rios, who guarded Father Serra on his journey to San Juan Capistrano. For generations, the Rios family intermarried with the indigenous people of the Acjachemen Nation. She grew up as a young child in the oldest home in California, occupied by the same family. The oldest street in Orange County is named after her family, Los Rios Street.
Description of program: A unique program that takes students on a journey into the lifestyle of the California Indian, in particular the Acjachemen Nation, which flourished in Southern California hundreds of years before Father Serra. Jacque shares through stories and songs, her people's indigenous tools, instruments, games and clothing. She includes how American Indians preserve their culture today by participating in Intertribal Pow wows. The children view traditional dances and even get the chance to participate. Students leave with a wonderful understanding of "environmentalism" and what it means to be "keepers of the earth."
